Most off-road lighting is built on the assumption that it will be thrown away. That is not a moral failing, it is a design decision, and it has consequences you only meet on the day something stops working. Here is how the two models actually differ, what we can and cannot repair, and what happens when you send a Rhino light back.
The short version
Serviceable and covered are two different things. Our products are designed to be opened and repaired — that is always true. Whether a specific repair is paid for is assessed per request, for the original purchaser. We keep those two ideas apart on purpose, because blurring them is how a lighting company ends up promising something it cannot deliver.
The disposable model, described fairly
A commodity light is usually a bought-in module fitted into a housing. Nobody in the supply chain drew the schematic, so nobody in the supply chain can diagnose the board. The housing is often sealed in a way that makes opening it a destructive act. And there are no spare parts, because a spare part only exists if somebody chose to make one.
The result is that a repair path does not exist — not because anyone refused, but because there is nothing to repair with. The only available answer to a failure is a replacement unit, and if the model has been superseded, sometimes not even that.
This is not always the wrong choice. A genuinely cheap light that is genuinely disposable is a coherent product. The problem is when a light is priced as though it were serviceable and built as though it were not.
What makes a product serviceable
Serviceability is not a promise, it is a set of construction decisions made years before the failure. Four of them matter most.
Somebody owns the design
We drew the boards in our products, so we can read the schematic, follow a fault to a component and know what the board is supposed to be doing at each point. That single fact is what turns "it does not work" into "this part failed". Without it, diagnosis stops at the enclosure.

The product comes apart
The pod light is a bolted assembly — the bezel is a discrete part held by fasteners, not a permanently bonded face. Whips are a stack of parts: the strip, the tube, the heat shrink, the end caps, the pigtail, the spring and the quick-disconnect base. Each of those is a separate item, which is why a damaged whip is usually a rebuild rather than a write-off.
The parts exist
Because we build the whips, we have the strip, the caps and the springs on the shelf. Because we machine the housings, the housing is a part rather than a purchase order to somebody else's factory. This is the quiet advantage of building in one building: the parts bin and the repair bench are the same room.
Somebody in the building knows the product
The people who assemble these products are the people who repair them. There is no tier-one support script between a fault and an engineer, because there is no tier one.
What we can usually repair
Stated as tendencies, not guarantees — every request is assessed on the item in front of us.
- Whips are the most repairable thing we build. Physical damage to the tube, a failed section of strip, a damaged pigtail, a broken end cap: these are rebuild work using parts we already make.
- Springs and quick-disconnect bases are separate items and can simply be replaced.
- Rock lights and pods are diagnosed at the board. Whether the fix is a component, a board or a housing depends entirely on what failed and how.
- Wiring, extensions and splitters are the most common actual fault in a system that has stopped working, and they are the easiest thing to swap.
What we often cannot
Being specific here is more useful than being reassuring.
- Springs are an expendable part by design. They are wound stiff so the whips do not flail, and the trade-off for that stiffness is that over-bending one can snap it. That is wear, not a defect, and it is not covered.
- Component shortages can limit what is repairable on older designs. If a part is not obtainable, the honest answer is that the repair is not available.
- Discontinued products are not covered under the warranty process. Where a claim is needed we may offer a credit percentage of the original purchase, less shipping, within twelve months of purchase.
- Clearance items are sold as-is and are not serviceable. All sales on those are final.
- Raw LED strip sold by the inch is an exposed component, not a finished sealed product, and is not covered the way a potted product is.
- Installation matters. Failure to follow the recommended installation procedures voids the warranty. Two that catch people out: every whip ships with ten feet of wire and extending it corrupts the data signal, and a spring is required on any whip two feet or longer.
What happens when you send something in
- You file it online. Log in or register, and submit the repair request through the RMA system. It generates a packing slip and shipping options.
- You ship it to us. Everything goes through the RMA system and comes to our facility — there are no local drop-offs, and transit damage is on the sender, so pack it properly.
- We diagnose it. This is the step that only exists because we own the design. The outcome is a specific finding, not a verdict on the whole unit.
- We repair, replace the failed part, or tell you it cannot be repaired. Coverage is assessed per request, and it applies to the original receipt holder only — it is not transferable.
- You watch it move. Status is visible in your account from the day it reaches us, with email updates along the way.
We do not quote a turnaround window. A number stated as a promise becomes a commitment on a queue nobody can see, and the tracked status is more useful than a figure we would sometimes miss.
Why this is worth paying for
The purchase price is the part of ownership that is easiest to compare and the least informative. What actually decides the cost of a lighting system over five years is what a failure costs: whether it is a part, a repair, a new unit, or a new kit because the old one is no longer made and the new one does not match.
A product built to be opened turns most failures into the cheapest of those outcomes. That is the whole argument, and it is the reason the words on our products are serviceable, not disposable rather than a warranty length.
